Here is Why I Wrote A Book About Moving To Portugal
And Other Mysteries that Friends and Family are Trying to Understand About Me
After much thought for many years, I finally decided to make Portugal my new home. It’s a country lined with sun-kissed beaches in the Summer and can be mist-covered in the winter. There are charming villages and vibrant cities, many of which I have started to explore. I’ve been fortunate enough to call many places home — from the 365 beaches of Antigua, the flying fish land of Barbados, the cow bells of Switzerland, the bachata dancing of The Dominican Republic, to the bustling streets of New York City, and the picturesque landscapes of Portugal.
My journey has been nothing short of an adventure because that’s me, according to some family members. I love exploring and discovering places, people, and cultures. My experience moving to Portugal led me to write a workbook for those considering a similar move.
Embracing New Adventures
Every wonderful place I have lived suited the different chapters of my life. Now, making a home in Portugal, I love the culture, the people, and the calm pace of life here. This isn’t just another stop on my journey — it’s a place I want to share with others, especially those thinking of making a big move for whatever reason.
Why not Elsewhere?
Portugal offers a serene backdrop to enjoy life’s simpler yet profoundly richer moments. Here, I don’t just live — I thrive. I have made it past 50 years and will unlikely exceed 100 like my grandfather. Maybe Portugal might surprise me. Time will tell. The idea of living in a ripe old age in a much less stressful environment, surrounded by history, good food, good healthcare, and natural beauty, is too tempting to ignore.
I have met many who asked me how we did it and the procedures. Others are just curious if it’s possible for them because they never imagined it. They believe only the rich do such things. I created a guide to help others navigate their journey to this beautiful country, and you don’t need to be rich.
Life Beyond the Corporate Ladder
Many of my friends and family often ask why I chose to step away from a fast-paced career to settle in a seemingly quiet corner of the world. To them, I say: isn’t life about finding happiness and fulfillment beyond the daily grind? Portugal offers a chance to escape the relentless pressure of corporate life and embrace a lifestyle where community, leisure, and well-being take center stage. Other places do as well. But I choose here.
Sure, I still work and engage with corporate stresses, but on my own time and on my own terms. I would be fine returning to corporate culture, but again, on my own terms, so that I can be truly effective in my leadership of such an organization. I cannot afford to go through life without being true to myself and the people I care for because life is too short. We must understand that the most important element in anything we do is the people.
A Workbook for Your Journey
The workbook I’ve crafted isn’t just a set of instructions — it’s a companion for your adventure, filled with insights, tips, space to write, and anecdotes that will guide you through the practicalities and joys of settling in Portugal. I tell you what should have happened and what happened to me, which is, more often than not, not what should have happened. The process is not easy. I wish I had a book like this to help me when I started. Whether you’re looking for a vibrant city vibe in Lisbon or a tranquil retreat in the Algarve, this book has you covered.
